Meet the Artist

Hello, my name is Chris Howarth, otherwise known as One Man and his Rake.

I am a sand artist located in Cornwall, UK. I have always had a keen interest in drawing and art in general. I became interested in the ephemeral aspect after seeing someone else using nothing more than a rake to draw large scale art pieces in the sand, before they are washed away with the next high tide. For me, this is a major part of my work. I love watching the sea reclaim my art as it washes its way up the beach. Sometimes it can take numerous waves to finally swallow the piece, but other times it can be taken with one wave.

I started creating sand art in February 2015 and have loved it ever since. I take my inspiration from patterns and everyday objects that I come across. My personal favourites are geometrical designs, but equally I love drawing free hand mazes. There is nothing better than to sit on the cliffs above my
work and watch people enjoy the piece I have created.
